A Tempo on the Trail Mural by Adrian Landon Brooks

A Cosmic Underpass Transformed

Immerse yourself in ‘Cosmos Composition,’ a vibrant mural by Austin-based artist Adrian Landon Brooks. This captivating artwork, created for TEMPO on the Trail, a temporary art exhibition in partnership with the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places program, transforms a simple trail underpass along the scenic Butler Trail into an otherworldly landscape. Drawing inspiration from his studio work, Brooks seamlessly intertwines cosmic imagery with the natural surroundings, creating a captivating contrast. The carefully chosen colors and playful composition bring the space to life, offering an immersive experience for the community. This project exemplifies the spirit of the Trail Conservancy’s Arts + Culture Plan, enhancing the user experience while respecting the natural environment and showcasing the power of public art to enrich our urban spaces.

Adrian Landon Brooks Reflects on Creating this Austin Mural

“I had such a great time collaborating with the folks at the Trail Conservancy and the City of Austin. The planning process was unique due to the environmental considerations of the lakeshore and the sheer scale of the underpass. Likewise, painting the entire wall wasn’t feasible, and cleaning the surface presented challenges due to potential runoff into the lake. We carefully cleaned portions of the wall as we worked, respecting the existing textures and creating a harmonious integration with the environment. Similarly, the project evolved organically, with subsequent additions addressing minor graffiti occurrences. It became a truly collaborative process, with the mural itself adapting and evolving over time, much like the natural world around it.”
